Experience the 2024 WAVE Interlake Artists Studio Tour with The Onchulenko's.

The WAVE is about sharing creativity with the community. Eighteen artists in 2024 are looking forward to connecting with old friends and new on Manitoba’s original art road trip. We hope you will join us when the WAVE rolls.

New work hangs from the back of the cottage at our stop on the tour…and sometimes on the side walls too. This year we are again joined by CJ TENNANT and her gemstone jewellery for double the colour fun.

The WAVE weekend is a free family friendly event that takes place over two weekends annually. In 2024, June 8 & 9, and August 31 & September 1st. Design your own path to see your favourites and plan to meet the 3 new artists and 1 returning friend this season.

“Get in the Picture” at Mandart Studio. Have your picture taken with your favourite art piece, post and share on instagram to qualify to win the MANDART prize pack. Enter as many times as you like. Prize pack will be onsite during the WAVE weekend.

“In life and in art, the journey is the destination.”

Double the fun at Mandart Studio North in 2024.

You are in for double the colour fun in the Village of Dunnottar, Ponemah specifically, on WAVE weekends when CJ Tennant joins us at Mandart Studio North. The magic of semi precious stones is undeniable and we love how CJ elevates our cottage drop zone into THE LOBBY in a way only CJ can. CJ has been flexing her creative muscles developing some new collections to be introduced to WAVE visitors in June. You’ll meet Margot, Daphne, and Millie below and many classic collections of friends in The Lobby.

With space at a premium at other shows The WAVE is the only time all year where you can try on all the collections for maximum mixing matching and styling options. Dress up play is definitely mandarted here.

“Never forget to play as well as plan. It’s how you will find the beautiful surprises.” CJT

In the Bunkhouse,

(below) and in our backyard is where you will find me. In 2024 you can experience Art Quilts and works in progress on The Investment Pieces Series. This is a body of work that I will be exhibiting in February of 2025 at la Maison des Artists in St Boniface. WAVE visitors will be the first to get a sneak peak of this work in progress.

Of course my annual outdoor exhibit of new paintings fresh from the paintwall will be blooming on the outside of our cottage. I’m hoping the weather gods will again bless us with a beautiful day. The WAVE rolls whatever Mother Nature dishes up.

How to WAVE?

All are welcome! Joining the WAVE tour is a simple matter of gathering your friends and family and preparing to have some creative fun together. Deciding where to start and what you want to see might be your biggest challenge of the day. There is a lot to see and experience. The traditional brochure is available at all artistrs studios. There are limited quantities at Travel Manitoba sites and at McNally Robinson Booksellers too.

Download the WAVE App or access a digital brochure via the website WAVE BROCHURE

Ask your Artist hosts for their local take on nearby restaurants and picnic stops for lunch or afternoon tea. Our neighbours and friends have recently launched The Interlake Brewery in Gimli. We love what they are developing and hope you’ll stop in there too to introdiuce yourself. Interlake Brewery

Getting to your destination…

Getting there can be half the fun. We have had all manner of vehicles in our back lane. If you are local ride your bike or walk down to see us with your dog. There is limited parking available in our lot. Overflow parking is available in the neighbourhood. On the grass verge before you enter ONE WAY Melville Lane. Also on Norway Street just past our studio location.

We thank you in advance for not blocking the laneway for our neighbours.

When does the WAVE roll?

The WAVE rolls during the third weekend in June each year. This year in 2024 that happens to be June 8th and 9th. The second WAVE gets going on the September long weekend. In 2024, that is August 31st and September 1st in 2024. All venues offer an immersive experience where you can meet the makers in their creative spaces and experience first hand where all the creative magic happens.

Studios are open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am-6pm daily.

There will be signs…

Blue and White signs like these will lead the way to artists studios. Keep an eye out for them along Highways 8 & 9 heading North of the city and in the Interlake neighbourhoods.

NEW at Mandart Studio this season.

What I am most excited to share with you this season is my NEW Mindful Moments Affirmation Deck. This deck is the result of a steep learning curve and patience, a lot of patience. This was a project I had been wanting to create for a very long time. In the new year I made it my priority and I can’t wait for you to experience it. I wrote a separate blog post about the process. You can read about it here.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Below are some images to give you a brief introduction to the idea of holding Art and inspiration in the palm of your hand. The illustrations on the card deck originated as details from my acrylic paintings. They are on the front where you will find Words of Wisdom. On the backs are Words in Action. These notes are designed to offer you a little more to think about or act upon after you have taken a moment for yourself.

The 52 cards of this deck share the wisdom I found at my personal crossroads when my world turned unexpectedly upside down. It was there I discovered a meditative practice before meditation and mindfulness were widely accepted. Words of wisdom and action evolved directly from that practice.

My hope is for these affirmative gems to offer you support in your daily efforts to be mindfully present, wherever you are.

What will I see at the WAVE?

The WAVE is an experience and each location will be different to other studios. On Melville lane in Ponemah we mount an outdoor exhibit twice annually. The work is always varied so the WAVE experience will be different between one WAVE Tour and the next. At our location CJ Tennant is working on some new collections to add to your dress up experience. This means I will get to shop on my way to the kitchen from my bedroom all weekend long. It could be a very fun experience for me.

The Mindful Moments Affirmation Deck will be available for you to try out and of course in addition to the exhibition of paintings on the exterior walls of the cottage there is also the bunkhouse. Textiles will be in the bunkie rain or shine. I’ll also have boxed greeting cards, my book Wisdom at The Crossroads and some small works on paper from the Meditation Series in the backyard

“Oasis” from the Meditation Series. This group are archivally matted to fit any 8” x 10” frame.

Available Paintings…

I’ve included a few new paintings below. Head to my website to see other available works in the Gallery section.

We all get by with a little help from our friends. if you are a WAVE regular please share your colourful experiences with your friends. and plan to stop in when the WAVE rolls. If you are new to the WAVE, there is no better time than now to gather a friend or your family to join us Lakeside for Manitoba’s original art road trip.

“Blue Rhapsody”, This big blue diptych has invited me on a playful journey with materials recently at the studio. Some of her details appear in the Mindful Moments Affirmation Deck. She began with the intention; Inquiry and discovery on the left side followed by process and resolution on the right. Together these 48” squares combine for a 4 foot by 8 foot experience.

This, diptych, “Echo” and “Sway”, is ready for the WAVE. She is 18” x 24’ and has her spot pre selected on the main exterior wall in Ponemah’s annual outdoor exhibit which is the Onchulenko Gallery. Art work hangs on the exterior of the cottage, weather permitting.

This pair began a new era in my painting practice with the addition of black gesso in the underlayers. My work is generally clear and bright because of the intentional absence of black. Visit us in person to experience the differences this colour choice makes in real time.

Whatever the weather…

The WAVE goes ahead whatever the weather. My husband, recent winner of employee of the month, is an excellent WAVE assistant. He annually makes rain coats for all the outdoor paintings…just in case of inclement weather. They have come in handy in the past but we are hopefull we will not have a need for them this coming WAVE weekend.

“Creativity takes courage.” -Henri Matisse.

Art is a personal experience, one that comes with many benefits. The most important might be the experience of scale. Digitally the two paintings below appear to be equals. In reality they make very different impressions.

The “Fairmont Suite; Poppies 3” will be among the offerings on the exterior. This big girl is 48’ x 48’, acrylic on panel.

Mandart North Studio, June 10 and 11, 10-6pm daily..

Scale can be a challenge to appreciate online. This “Field Study” of the Square Prairie Series is a comparatively small 20’ x 20”, acrylic on Canvas. Less than a quarter of the size of her Poppy companion here on this blog.

A little recap…

So, you’ve nominated a driver, selected your first stops and are ready for a creative adventure.

Beyond the 18 artists Studio’s opening to WAVE enthusiasts this season there is so much to see and do along the way. Our iconic piers are a crowd favourite for swimmers and non swimmers alike. Piers are up from the July long weekend and begin their annual fall retreat after September long. We have a beach around the corner, a hammock out front and lots of local tips to inform your Interlake Odyssey. You’ll soon experience why we end our guest book entries every visit with, “I love the Lake”.

Have I forgotten anything? Have a question? Please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are looking forward to seeing you on the WAVE.

All best,

Amanda
